Mark's reply was kind of what I was looking for and backs up what I have been told re:3ph backhoes "breaking" tractors. Anyone out there with a "real" story about a machine breaking under normal conditions while actually working and because of the backhoe? How about the same WITH a sunframe?? I am not sure that having a subframe exempts one from the possibility! Another question (probably sure to raise a few hackles). Several years ago, while I was browsing a Cub Cadet yard, the sales person started doing the usual color bashing and was mentioning how some of the other brands (orange in this case) had gone to a cast aluminum gear housing and, that since that was such a vital "structural" element of the tractor (which I believe it is), they thus had a much "weaker tractor in terms of overall strength. What bearing do you folks think that has on whether or not it's a good idea to put a hoe on the back of a compact w/ or w/o a subframe? Or was it all sales hype?

Don't know about the rust. My TC35 has none after a bit over a year in both inside and outside storage. However, in response to several of the posts in the middle of the thread --- Re: NH TC's WIDTH.
I have heard several times that NH publishes their data and specs re: tractor width in kind of an odd way. Apparently, the measurements they give are to the MIDDLE of the tire not the outside! I had always wondered when I read that 48" figure in their specs and then actually looked at my rig. I figured even if I dished them in all the way and cut the outside sidewall off, I'd still not get near that! This jive with anybody elses' findings/knowledege?

Bingham,Dave & Mark. I guess I have to disagree with a notion that I read into your posts. The dealers who are giving the great prices are not simply giving them to folks from "far away" who are buying their rigs from them never to be seen again! I am willing to bet that the great majority of the tractors that these "more reasonably priced" dealers are selling are local. Giving the impression that somehow these guys are screwing the higher priced dealers or ducking out of the service end of things is simply not a fair assesment. I also know for a fact that my local dealer's (with higher priced tractors) labor rate is higher than a lower price tractor dealer 1 1/2 hr away. It is simply a difference in how different folks choose to run their business and how willing they are to take advantage of the vagaries of the local market. As far as service and waiting goes, my impression is this - my local guy (who I did not buy my tractor from) doesn't always rush me in or give me the same treatment as some of his other clients - but I believe it is based much more on the priority of the repair (farmers down a rig and losing lots of $$ or municipal equipment that is holding up several other pieces on a job get preferential treatment) as opposed to where one bought the tractor! Sometimes I get repaired at the top of the list, sometimes at the bottom, sometimes in the middle of the pack!IMHO

My NH TC35D = A little more than 1 gal/hr. FEL work moving heaps of snow @ about a steday 1800 rpm. Moderately cool weather (10 to 30 degrees) mostly . Straight diesel from local gas station. A bit higher fuel usage than I would have hoped for!

WARNING Harvey's suggestion is good one for a number of reasons. You actually have the fuel oil deliverred to your place. You probably pay less than you would if you bought it in small quantity. You are not paying road tax for it. You are not paying sales tax (at least for residential use in most states). You'll always have plenty of it! BUT WARNING -- make absolutely sure that the pump is sealed into your tank (threaded into bung hole) and that it is performing properly (no air leaks). If it leaks air, the "whistler" that the oil company uses to ascertain when your tank is full will not whistle correctly and you run the risk of having the oil fill person either not putting enough oil in your tank (thinks it's full when it isn't) or, heaven forbid, they will fill your basement or yard with oil!! I have heard of it happening and it didn't sound pretty! By the way, my NH TC35 has the fill located in the back of the tractor, still up high, but with a nice large (3"+) diametr fill opening.

Whew - take a deep breath Tom, everything's gonna be OK. I think you may have read into a typo on Gary's post re: seatbelts. If I translate correctly, I think he was saying that he WASN'T totally awed and went on to comment about the poorly designed seatbelt on the Boomer (Orange having perhaps a superior design!?). I sure took the post as a positive statement about Blue not a negative one about other colors. Let's not be so picky, eh? If there has been any bashing lately, it has been about dealers and not colors or models IMHO.

Larry & Gary, the questions re:dealers allocation and trading around are interesting. I have some opinions that are based strictly on observations at and of the various dealers I have dealt with. 1)Dealers shopping sround? It is pretty common practice for them to come up with equipment at other dealers and have it "transferred" to their dealership so they must talk $ during those searches and process (after all they're paying for it). I think they know full well what the other guys are doing. 2)Allotment? I believe that there ARE tractors out there for dealers to acquire and sell (about every decent, and some not so decent, sized dealer I've visited has a fair selection of variously equipped models in their yard). So I don't think it's like the PT Cruiser phenomena where there are very low numbers and a great demand so that dealers can (legally?) charge a premium for product due to supply side challenges. There is certainly some sort of allotment but I can't believe that NH wouldn't supply more tractors to those dealers who are good to them and sell more tractors.
IMHO some dealers simply don't care too much about making as much money as others but I really think this is a factor of personality and business style rather than strictly profit motive. Three local NH dealers (within 2 hours) -- Dealer #A inherited the dealership from family, likes to take 2 hour long lunches, the owners are the only ones who talk sales (and I don't think to each other) and just simply ain't too interested in making great deals. Dealer #B gets right back to me, wheels and deals and really seems interested in my business - he clearly has the highest overhead in terms of physical plant and location! Dealer #C is smaller than other two (but still has Boomers in yard and says he can get whatever I want pronto) is willing to talk tractors at length and is a great guy but won't (says he "can't") really deal on $$ at all -from my perspective, he has by far the lowest overhead! Go Figure! Different businesses have different business strategies! I think the bottom line as a consumer is that you go with what makes you comfortable. Price is a part of what makes me feel comfortable so is definitely a factor in my decisions. Hey, $2000 difference on a rig is a nice tiller or 1/3 of a backhoe (depending, of course on what dealer you talk to!!!). Nuff said.

I made the same assumptions/mis-recollections when I rushed out to look at an advertised used 1725. Having already looked at and played with "D" model Boomers, I was disappointed in the "basicness" of the 1725. However, with about 200 hours on it, R-4s & 7308 FEL, the owner was looking for about $13,000, so yours seems like a great find (if yours has a loader & R-4s, if not then it ain't so great!). As stated above, if it'll do what you need, consider it! Used compacts are not all that common but I believe will start to get more-so given the numbers out there and IMHO - the economy will start to push some folks into divesting of their "toys" - just an opinion. Consider that with a rear mount snowblower:
1. Save an avalanche of $$$
2. Much less hassle of install/uninstall (not unlike PC software)
3. Keep bucket on/available for balance & moving drifts, piles, etc.
4. Get to use that nifty swiveling seat for something more useful than showing other tractor owners your nifty swiveling seat!
5. No need for a cab - you keep warm from all the body contortions!
6. Get to come up with lots of answers for the same question you get asked over and over again - "Why isn't your snow blower on the front?"

AHA!! Thanks RickB for proving yet again that an old dog can indeed be taught -- if not new tricks then at least new facts! I had been given bad information by my NH guys re: clutch and passed it along. Should have actually tried the clutch to confirm its opreration of PTO AND drive train. As far as the amount of "airplay" this topic takes up on these forums, I lay it partially onto a desire to "have it all" and the fact that with the small frame Boomers you kinda lose one of the old line features - (while admittedly gaining a while slew of improved & new ones!!).

Looking at a '97 Kubota L2900 DT (4X4, 8X8 trans)with Woods 7500 Hoe & 480 FEL -- 660 hrs. In pretty good shape and well maintained (dealer's cousin!?). Is that a good price? Should I jump on it or keep looking? Thanks

Hey, thanks for all the great assistance! As it turns out, when the seller actually gt the tractor back in his yard, lo and behold - it had turfs, not R-4's, on it! That kinda bummed me out, as I was really psyched for the R-4's. He also said he had misquoted me on the price and was really asking $13,800! That made me even less excited. I think the tractor is still a pretty good deal at that price and with the turfs but I need to mull it over for a few days to kind of "re-adjust" to a higher price and different equipment than I had gotten excited about. Will keep you posted!
